The New Forest provides a diverse habitat for many animals, and ticks certainly use that to their advantage! Not only do ticks cause a reaction where they have attached, but they can also spread some nasty infectious diseases. This year is a bumper year for them!
Many people have heard of Lyme’s Disease, a dangerous condition affecting the joints which leads to serious illness in people. This condition is transmitted by ticks and can also be passed on to our pets. Numbers of confirmed cases are low, but there is a suspicion that many affected pets go undiagnosed, since treatment involves standard penicillin-type antibiotics.
Ticks are not only a problem in the UK, if you are thinking of travelling to Europe then the news is even worse. Without effective tick control your pet could be at risk of contracting other tick-borne diseases such as Babesiosis and Leishmaniasis. These diseases cause a range of symptoms and can be very difficult to cure completely.
The best advice is to use an effective anti-tick product on your pet. Ask at any of our surgeries for more information.
